Course Details
This course covers the causes and consequences of arc flash, relevant Irish legislation, and key standards including NFPA 70E, I.S. 10101, and EN 50110. Participants will explore incident energy levels, Hazard Risk Categories, approach boundaries, arc flash PPE requirements, safe isolation practices, PTW and LOTO procedures, emergency response, and incident reporting before completing a formal multiple choice assessment. This course is Engineers Ireland approved and is eligible for 3 CPD hours.

Course Aim
This course aims to provide participants with a comprehensive awareness of arc flash hazards in electrical environments, equipping them with the knowledge to identify risks, understand the relevant Irish and international legislative and technical standards, select and inspect appropriate arc flash PPE, and implement safe systems of work in compliance with NFPA 70E, I.S. 10101, and EN 50110.
Course Objectives
This programme develops participant awareness of high-energy electrical hazards and the control measures required to reduce exposure within operational environments. The training examines regulatory obligations, internationally recognised electrical safety frameworks, risk evaluation methodologies, protective clothing and equipment requirements, and structured electrical safety practices for energised and isolated work activities. Participants will also explore boundary protection principles, electrical permit systems, incident response procedures, and practical isolation techniques aligned with current industry standards and best practice.
Learning Outcomes
1. Define arc flash and explain its causes, types and potential consequences.
2. Identify the relevant Irish legislation and international standards governing electrical safety and arc flash risk.
3. Explain the requirements and justification process for energised electrical work under NFPA 70E and EN 50110.
4. Interpret arc flash equipment labels and identify the appropriate PPE category for a given task.
5. Select, inspect and correctly wear arc flash PPE in accordance with IEC 61482-2 and ELIM ratings.
6. Describe the hierarchy of controls applicable to arc flash risk and apply safe systems of work including Permit to Work and Lock Out/Tag Out.
7. Carry out a 5-point safe isolation procedure in accordance with best practice
8. Outline the immediate actions required in response to an arc flash incident
