Course Details
This course covers hazardous energy types, Irish LOTO legal requirements, employee roles and responsibilities, correct use of lockout devices, and the full 6-step LOTO procedure. It also addresses group lockout, shift handovers, subcontractor management, temporary re-energisation, and concludes with a 10-question multiple choice assessment with a 70% pass mark. This course is Engineers Ireland approved and is eligible for 3 CPD hours.
Course Aim
This course equips participants with the knowledge to safely apply Lockout Tagout (LOTO) procedures in the workplace. It covers hazardous energy control, the 6-step LOTO procedure, correct use of lockout devices, and Irish health and safety legislation, enabling participants to safely isolate equipment before maintenance or servicing activities.
Course Objectives
This programme develops participant competency in energy isolation practices within industrial and commercial environments. The training explores hazardous energy recognition, statutory obligations under Irish health and safety legislation, personnel responsibilities within an isolation system, and the implementation of structured isolation methodologies for maintenance and servicing operations. Participants will also examine isolation hardware selection, coordinated isolation activities involving multiple personnel or contractors, and the documentation requirements necessary to support effective workplace safety and risk prevention.
Learning Outcomes
1. Define Lockout Tagout and explain its purpose in controlling hazardous energy during maintenance and servicing activities.
2. Identify and describe all seven types of hazardous energy and the risks associated with stored and residual energy.
3. State the relevant Irish legal requirements and the duties of employers and employees under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007.
4. Identify the three employee roles in a LOTO programme — authorised, affected and other — and describe the responsibilities of each.
5. Select and correctly apply the appropriate lockout device for a given isolation point.
6. Apply the full 6-step LOTO procedure in the correct sequence: preparation, notification, shutdown, isolation, lockout/tagout application and verification.
7. Demonstrate the correct procedure for safely removing LOTO and restoring energy.
8. Describe the procedures for group lockout, shift handover and working with sub-contractors.
9. Identify the key components of a written workplace LOTO programme and machine-specific procedure.
